Dan Burt
Loosening up in Watercolor
![]()
Dan Burt paints in "splashes, dribs and strokes" of vibrant color. If you ever have the opportunity to see him give a demonstration don't miss it. He has such a unique style. His pallette conists of bright transparent colors separated into light middle and dark values. Starting with a light, minimal pencil sketch he begins applying spots of color in middle values with smaller areas of lighter values, being careful to preserve quite a bit of white. You can tell he has a composition in mind, but it often doesn't become clear until the last step of adding the dark values.
He stresses the painting, not of the object itself, but, an "icon" or representation of an object. This was quite freeing to me. Painting the sugesstion of a object or figure rather than the object itself takes the pressure off and frees you up to think the placement of color.
Dan Burt is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society and National Watercolor Society. His work is included in several books, among them, Splash 4 and The Best of Watercolor.
